Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
Hidalgo, Tx - Dave Gilmore's hat trick led the Corpus Christi Rayz to a 6-3 win over the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees Saturday night at the Dodge Arena to snap a 10-game winless streak.
The meeting was the 24th meeting all-time between the two clubs and Gilmore becomes the first individual to record a hat trick in the series. His first two opened the game's scoring, as he placed a loose puck coughed up by Bees goaltender Jacque Vezina into the net 55-seconds into the game and scored his second 9:50 into the second period as he tipped a Vezina misplayed puck past the goal line.
The Bees were forced to play "catch up" after Rayz forward Blair Stayzer batted a rebound off of Vezina into the net with 8:43 remaining in the second period to give the Rayz a 3-0 lead. Jason Hawes started the Bees rally by stuffing in a power play goal through Rayz goaltender Josh Blackburn with 3:58 remaining in the period to cut the Rayz lead to 3-1 through two periods.
Blaz Emersic and Joe Guenther combined for Killer Bees goals 2:46 apart 4:01 into the third period to tie the contest up 3-3, but the comeback bid would end as quick as it was started. Gilmore converted the hat trick with his third goal of the game 47-seconds after the Bees had tied the game, by registering his third power play goal of the game. Ryan Carter went on to add a shorthanded goal with 11:48 remaining and a power play goal with 2:42 remaining to preserve the Rayz win 6-3.
Rio Grande Valley out-shot the Rayz 44-29 in the contest, but surrendered four power play goals in the game (out of eight opportunities for the Rayz). The Bees had a season high ten opportunities of their own, but could only convert on one.
The win in net for Blackburn was his sixth straight against the Bees in the season series. Rio Grande Valley will close out the season series against the Rayz Thursday night in Corpus Christi.
