Bucks Hold Off Austin 4-3

LAREDO, Texas – The defending CHL Champion Laredo Bucks clinched their second straight Southeast Division title with a 4-3 win over the Austin Ice Bats in front of a sellout crowd of 8,002 at the Laredo Entertainment Center on Saturday night. Forward Steve Simoes scored a goal and had a pair of assists to lead Laredo to their third straight win as they improved to 9-0-1 in their last 10 games. Overall the Bucks are 32-22-3 with 67 points and the Bucks are just one point out of the top spot in the Southern Conference. Laredo hosts Austin again on Wednesday. The Bucks wasted no time scoring. Defenseman Oriel McHugh let loose a wrist shot from the high slot that forward Igor Agarunov redirected just fifty seconds in to make it 1-0 Laredo. It was the 13th of the year for Agarunov. Later in the period the Ice Bats tied the game with a power play goal by forward Kris Knoblauch at 14:43. With time ticking down in the period the Bucks grabbed the lead. Defenseman Dion Hyman carried across the Austin line and dropped the puck to the high slot where forward Steve Simoes teed up a one timer to make it 2-1 Laredo with just 14.5 seconds to play in the frame. It was the 12th of the year for Simoes.

In the second a great hustle play led to a 3-1 lead for Laredo. Forward Jeff Bes dumped the puck in from center ice which banked off the end boards back to the slot. Bucks forward Brent Cullaton hustled around the Ice Bats defense, grabbed the puck and quickly slipped it into the net at 8:19. It was his 20th of the season. The Ice Bats got back in the game when forward Jared Dumba scored on a wrist shot from just inside the left circle at 18:55.

In the third period the Ice Bats tied the game when defenseman Jeff Alcombrack scored on a spectacular end to end rush at 5:38. Just 41 seconds later the Bucks responded. Rookie forward Darryl Lloyd crashed the net and slammed in the rebound of a Simoes shot to put the Bucks up 4-3. It was the 11th of the year for Lloyd. The Bucks survived down the stretch and held on for the win to clinch their second straight Southeast Division title. FINAL SCORE Laredo 4, Austin 3.

David Guerrera won his third straight start in is 5-0-1 in the last six games. Guerrera improved to 16-12-2 as he stopped 31 of 34 shots. Matt Barnes took the loss allowing four goals on 46 shots to fall to 22-15-3. The Bucks tied a season high with the 46 shots. Laredo was 0-6 on the power play while Austin was 1-4.
