Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, MS â Memphis RiverKings All-Stars Don Parsons and Derek Landmesser will compete in skills competitions at the All-Star Game, taking place this week in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The two RiverKings veterans, who left for Albuquerque earlier this week, will represent the two-time defending CHL champions through several different events, as well as the all-star game itself, which will be played on Thursday.
Defenseman Derek Landmesser will participate in the CHL's "Hardest Shot" competition for the Northern Conference. Landmesser, along with Oklahoma City's Tyler Fleck and Colorado's Brad Williamson, will attempt to shoot the puck faster than the participants from the Southern Conference.
Meanwhile, RiverKings captain Don Parsons will participate in two events - the "Accuracy Shoot-Out" and the "Breakaway Relay".
In the "Accuracy Shoot-Out" event, Parsons will attempt to hit four foam targets which will be placed in each corner of the goal. The RiverKings captain will have twenty seconds and eight pucks with which to try and accomplish this feat, with the shots coming from twenty-five feet away from the goal. Parsons will be teamed with New Mexico's Chris Richards and Fort Worth's Chad Woollard, who won the competition last season by needing only five shots and 13.63 seconds to hit all four targets.
The "Breakaway Relay" competition is described as follows by the Central Hockey League office:
Skaters are separated into two (2) groups of five (5) skaters per team. Each group has one (1) minute in which each skater in that group must take a puck from the center ice face-off dot and proceed in a breakaway against the goalie of the opposing team. Teams will alternate groups. Each goalie faces one (1) group of five (5) skaters. A skater in any group may not proceed from the center ice face-off dot on his breakaway until the skater preceding him has cleared the blue line and entered the neutral zone after his breakaway attempt.
Parsons, Richards, Woollard, Oklahoma City's Hardy Sauter and Bossier-Shreveport's Craig Minard make up one of the Northern Conference's teams. Parsons' team will attempt to score on Amarillo goaltender Shawn DeGagne.
Each skills competition will award points to one of the conferences, and the conference with the most points after the final event will be declared the winner.
Parsons, Landmesser and the rest of the RiverKings will be back in action on Friday of this week as they host the Indianapolis Ice in the first of three consecutive games against their Northeast Division foes. Game time is set for 7:05 pm CST at the DeSoto Civic Center.
