RIO GRANDE VALLEY KILLER BEES
2003-04 WEEKLY RELEASE
FOR THE WEEK OF Jan. 19 - Jan 25TH
BEES FIND ALL-STAR BREAK A MUCH NEEDED BREAK
As the Dodge 2004 CHL All-Star Game takes center stage Thursday night, the Killer Bees will have a little time off until returning to battle Friday night against the Corpus Christi Rayz. The Bees just wrapped up a span of 7 games in 10 nights Sunday night with a 4-1 victory over Odessa, and now prepare for a weekend against two division opponents. When they return to the ice Friday, the Bees will wear their dark uniforms on home ice. Teams in the CHL begin the season wearing their white uniforms on home ice and their dark jerseys on the road, but after the all-star break, teams switch and wear their dark jerseys on home ice and white jerseys on the road.
BEE OF THE WEEK
This week's "Bee of the Week" honor, for their role in the previous week's games, goes to defenseman Jason Tessier. The fourth year pro co-led the team in scoring on the week, leading the defensemen in scoring with a goal and 2 assists for 3 points in 4 games. Tessier recorded his first multi-point performance with a goal and an assist Sunday to help lead the Bees to a 4-1 win over Odessa. The St. Jerome, Quebec native currently co-leads Bees defensemen in scoring with 5 goals and 12 assists for 17 points.
SKILLFUL BILL
Prior to the Dodge 2004 CHL All-Star Game in Albuquerque Thursday night, the all-stars will compete in a Northern Conference verses Southern Conference formatted skills competition. The Comcast CHL Skills Competition will take the all-star members and place them in competitions to determine the fastest skater, hardest shooter, the most accurate shooter, and the best goaltenders in a rapid fire and breakaway relay competition. It is subject to change, but Bees forward Bill Newson is currently scheduled to compete in the "Fastest Skater" competition and in the "Breakaway Relay" contest against Wichita goaltender Nathan Grobbins.
DIVISION
The Bees gear up for two division home games this weekend before hitting the road for a season high six consecutive road games spanning two weeks. Against Southeast Division opponents, the Bees have a record of 8-13-2. Bees forward Bill Newson not only leads the team in overall scoring, but also leads the team in division scoring with 13 goals and 5 assists for 18 points. Back on the blueline, Kevin Mackie (3g,4a), Jason Tessier (3g,4a) and Mike Rees (1g,6a) co-lead Killer Bees defensemen in division scoring with 7 points.
