Mississippi RiverKings News Release
ALL GOOD THINGS COME TO AN END Despite a 9-1-2 regular season record this month, the Mississippi RiverKings lost two out of three games to the Texas Brahmas and failed to advance to the conference semifinals. Fans may have felt disappointed following the loss, but the RiverKings did have a season filled with memories. For example, the franchise played its 1,000th Central Hockey League regular season game, and Louis Dumont recorded his 1,000th professional hockey point.
SERIES IN REVIEW Monday: Mississippi 6, Texas 3 Chad Woollard scored twice in the first period as the RiverKings took Game 1. Woollard's two goals sandwiched a power play goal from Steve Makway as the RiverKings jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period.
The onslaught continued into the second period, as Jason Lawmaster scored to make it a 4-0 game. The Brahmas pulled David Cacciola in favor of Brett Jaeger following Lawmaster's goal, but the change in net didn't stop Zach Pearson from scoring late in the period to put the RiverKings in front by a handful.
The Brahmas did get the last word in the second, though, as Tyler Skworchinski's last-minute power play goal got them on the board. That goal seemed to give the Brahmas a boost, as a power play goal from Anders Strome and a lamp-lighter from Greg McConnell in the third period made it a 5-3 game with 6:32 remaining.
Darrell Stoddard scored into an empty net with 1:42 left to seal the deal for the RiverKings, who got 30 saves from Sebastien Centomo tonight. Cacciola made nine saves, while Jaeger made 14.
Wednesday: Texas 3, Mississippi 0 Brett Jaeger made 23 saves as the Brahmas shutout the RiverKings in Game 2.
Greg McConnell scored his second goal of the playoffs with 5:45 remaining in the first period to give the Brahmas a 1-0 lead. Grant Jacobsen scored his first goal of the series on a power play with 6:33 remaining in the second period to make it 2-0. Then Scott Sheppard scored a power play goal for his first of the playoffs with 13:19 remaining in the third period to seal the deal for the Brahmas.
Sebastien Centomo made 27 saves for the RiverKings.
Thursday: Texas 3, Mississippi 2 Scott Sheppard scored twice to lead the Brahmas over the RiverKings in Game 3.
Ryan Held put the RiverKings in front on the power play with his first goal of the playoffs 5:52 into the game. The Brahmas came back right away, though. Sheppard's second goal of the series at 6:57 made it a 1-1 game. With 42 seconds remaining in the first, Anders Strome scored his second of the series to give the Brahmas a 2-1 lead after one.
Sheppard scored on a penalty shot 6:31 into the second period to make it a two-goal game. However, the RiverKings never quit. Ryan Campbell scored shorthanded with 5:10 remaining in the third period for his first goal of the playoffs.
Brett Jaeger made 41 saves for the Brahmas. Sebastien Centomo made 27 saves for the RiverKings.
