Mississippi RiverKings News Release

Joel Irving's shorthanded goal with 6:01 remaining in the game proved to be the difference as the Youngstown Steelhounds defeated the Mississippi RiverKings tonight 4-3 at the DeSoto Civic Center.

Irving scored his second goal of the game as he darted around RiverKings defenseman Steve Makway in the left circle. He fired a shot over the left shoulder of RiverKings goalie Larry Sterling that rattled around the frame of the goal before dropping down inside the net.

The Steelhounds improved to 2-0 on the young season. The RiverKings dropped to 1-1.

The RiverKings got on the board early after the Steelhounds ran into penalty trouble. Captain Derek Landmesser scored on a two-man advantage 1:42 into the game for his first on the season.

But the Steelhounds capitalized on their power play chances. Jeff Alcombrack and Irving scored on back-to-back penalties RiverKings defenseman Brian Mullally committed midway through the period. The Steelhounds led 2-1 after one.

Chad Woollard opened the second period with his first goal on the season. He fired a shot from the top of the left circle that may have changed direction before eluding Steelhounds goalie Andy Franck. The Steelhounds regained the lead just a couple minutes later, though. Eric Przepiorka scored during a goalmouth scramble to make it 3-2 Youngstown.

The RiverKings evened the score again with 5:29 left in the middle term. Ryan Campbell scored on a rebound of his own to make it 3-3 after 40.

The RiverKings went one for 10 on the power play. The Steelhounds went two for six. The teams combined for 111 penalty minutes.

Franck made 28 saves and earned the game's first star. Sterling made 22 saves.

The RiverKings only have one game next week. They visit the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs on Friday at 7:05 p.m. Coverage on KWAM 990 begins at 7 o'clock.
