Dunbar's 44 Saves Lead Rage to Shootout Win
October 20, 2007 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Rocky Mountain Rage News Release
Amarillo, Texas - Rocky Mountain Rage goaltender Terry Dunbar made 44 saves through regulation and overtime before stopping all six Amarillo Gorillas shooters he faced in a shootout to lead his club to a 4-3 victory. The Rage begin the season with a 2-0-0 record and sit atop the Northwest Division standings through the opening weekend of the Central Hockey League's 2007-08 season.
Rocky Mountain's Daymen Rycroft led off the scoring with a power play goal at 17:04 of the first before Simon Watson re-directed a Pat Sutton slapshot from the point at 19:44 to give the Rage a 2-0 lead through 20 minutes.
Amarillo cut the lead in half with a short-handed goal off the stick of Chris Martini at 9:17 of the second, but Brent Cullaton responded with his first goal of the season for Rocky Mountain at 10:57 to re-establish the two-goal advantage.
The Rage held their 3-1 edge until the game's final three minutes. The Gorillas started mounting their comeback when David Nimmo found a loose puck on the goal line and slotted it inside the far post from his knees at 17:25 of the third. Skating on the man advantage and with their goaltender Dan McWhinney pulled in favor of an extra attacker, Amarillo then sent the game to overtime after Nimmo scored the equalizer off a scramble in front with 2.8 seconds remaining.
Following a scoreless overtime during which each club skated on the power play, the shootout featured near flawless play from both goaltenders. McWhinney stymied the Rage's first five shooters, and Dunbar matched him save for save. Nathan Rosychuk then fired a snapshot under the bar to finally give Rocky Mountain the lead in the sixth round, and Dunbar sealed the victory by stopping the Gorillas' Jason Chafe for his sixth consecutive shootout save.
On the heels of last night's 3-2 season-opening win over the Odessa Jackalopes, tonight's effort marked Rocky Mountain's second consecutive road victory for the first time in team history. The club now turns its attention to its home opener at Broomfield Event Center on Friday, Oct. 26, against the Tulsa Oilers at 7:05 p.m.
