Mississippi RiverKings News Release

SOUTHAVEN, MS --- The Memphis RiverKings snapped their ten game winless streak Saturday night with a 3-2 shootout win over the Youngstown Steelhounds at the DeSoto Civic Center. Ryan Campbell scored two goals and Derek Landmesser had the game winner in the shootout. It was the RiverKings' (19-30-3) first game this season to go to a shootout and the first time this season that they won a game after trailing after the first period. For Youngstown (20-31-5), the loss extended their winless streak to six games.

The Steelhounds received a first period power play goal at 3:49 from Joey Sewell and took the lead into intermission. Ryan Campbell tallied a pair of special teams goals in the second, a power play goal at 1:37 and a short handed goal at 8:45, to give the RiverKings the lead. The shorthanded goal came on a drive to the net and a Tim Plett pin-point pass from the right wing. The goals were Campbell's 21st and 22nd of the season. The short handed effort tied Travis Banga's four shorties for the team lead.

Youngstown struck back 3 ½ minutes later when Chris Richards fired one past RiverKings goalie Guy St. Vincent to tie the game. A scoreless third period followed, although it was not a third period devoid of scoring chances for either side. Memphis outshot Youngstown 16-13 in the period, with both teams having several other quality chances that didn't result on actual shots on net. St. Vincent came up with several key saves as did the Steelhounds' David St. Germain to keep the score even and force the overtime and the shootout.

Through the first four rounds of the shootout, Memphis had a 2-1 edge on conversions from Dorian Anneck and Darrell Stoddard with Joey Sewell collecting the lone Youngstown score. Steelhounds center Daryl Lloyd then tied it at two to start the fifth round, setting the stage for Landmesser's game-winner. The CHL's top scoring defenseman took the puck to the left and shot it low slipping it underneath St. Germain to get credit for his 14th goal of the season and his third game winner.

The RiverKings outshot Youngstown 48-33 for the game and improved to 6-1-0 in the season series. St. Vincent picked up his first win since January 13. He made 31 saves on 33 shots in regulation and the overtime and also stopped three in the shootout including the league's goal scoring leader Jeff Christian. St. Germain took the loss on a 45 save effort.

The two teams meet in a return engagement tomorrow night at the DeSoto Civic Center at 7:05. The RiverKings will be wearing the same Mardi Gras themed jerseys that they wore on Tuesday night. The jersey's will be sold at auction after the game with proceeds benefiting hurricane relief in New Orleans.
