Youngstown SteelHounds News Release

Southhaven, MS. - The Youngstown SteelHounds (20-31-5) battled hard versus the Memphis RiverKings (19-30-3) but eventually fell in a shootout by a final score of 3-2. Derek Landmesser scored the game winner in the shootout and added an assist as Memphis ended their 10-game winless streak and extended the SteelHounds winless slide to six straight games (0-4-2). Joey Sewell scored a goal and had an assist for Youngstown and David St. Germain made 45 saves in the loss at the DeSoto Civic Center. The shootout loss marked the third consecutive road game that Youngstown has had to work overtime winning in a shootout in Fort Worth and dropping a shootout in Rio Grande. This season, the Hounds are 3-3 in shootouts and for Memphis they were the last CHL team to play in a shootout.

The first period saw a flurry of power play opportunities that saw Youngstown take advantage first with a power play goal scored at the 3:49 mark by Joey Sewell, his 17th goal of the season, assisted by Matt Hanson and Jeff Christian (second in the CHL with 88 points). The goal was Sewell's 15th in 15 games as a SteelHound. Towards the end of the period, Memphis received a great opportunity with Chris Shaffer getting a five-minute charging penalty. The RiverKings were unable to connect during the first 1:20 of the major power play that ended the period and overall were 0 for 4 with the power play in the first period. Memphis outshot the Hounds 15-8 in the period as David St. Germain stopped all 15 shots he faced and Guy St. Vincent made seven saves.

The RiverKings took advantage of the major penalty in the second period and tied the game just 1:37 into the middle frame with a power play goal by Ryan Campbell, his 21st goal of the season, assisted by Peter Robertson and Derek Landmesser. Memphis took the lead with a shorthanded goal at the 8:45 mark with Campbell netting his second goal of the night and his team-leading fourth shorthanded goal, assisted by Tim Plett and Robertson. The Hounds answered the bell though with Chris Richards scoring his first goal since February 4th on a great feed by Sewell. For Richards it was his 16th goal of the season and it extends his point streak to 16 straight games (second longest point streak in the CHL this season, Bossier-Shreveport's Chris Brassard 17-games). The RiverKings outshot the Hounds 14-10 in the second period and carried a two period total lead of 29-18.

In the third period, the teams each had several quality scoring chances with Memphis outshooting Youngstown 16-13 but neither team could find the back of the net eventually sending the game to overtime. A minor on Darryl Lloyd in overtime made things interesting giving the RiverKings their ninth power play of the game but Youngstown's killers continued their strong play finishing the RiverKings night with the man advantage with an 88.8% success rate.

The game eventually went to a shootout where Joey Sewell and Darryl Lloyd scored for Youngstown but in the last of the fifth round Derek Landmesser scored the game winning goal ending the RiverKings losing skid.

Memphis outshot the Hounds 48-33 in the game as David St. Germain made 45 saves falling to 15-24-4, while Gut St. Vincent turned aside 31 shots improving to 9-15-1.

The Hounds continue their final road trip of the season with the re-match versus the RiverKings tomorrow night in the DeSoto Civic Center. Face-off is scheduled for 8:05 PM (EST).
