RiverHawks Help Bring National Pastime To Iraq

ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Rockford RiverHawks are bringing the National Pastime to Iraq.
The RiverHawks, along with local restaurant Toni's of Winnebago, are gathering baseballs, bats and gloves for American soldiers in Iraq.
Many local men and women stationed in the Middle East are spending their downtime playing baseball. Unfortunately, there is a drastic lack of playing equipment.
"It's been brought to our attention that some of our local members of the armed forces are in need of baseball equipment and we would like our fans to donate any gloves and bats they might have around the house," said RiverHawks general manager Mike Babcock, a former Marine. "Baseball is, of course, the National Pastime and this is one way to send a little bit of the American culture to the troops serving our country abroad."
The RiverHawks will be accepting donations at Marinelli Field through the end of August. Toni's of Winnebago will also accept donations at their Winnebago location, 501 Elida St.
All equipment gathered will be sent to local troops stationed in Iraq.
The RiverHawks are the defending champions of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 13th season. All games are broadcasted live on WRHL-FM, 102.3 - the Hub.
