RiverHawks come from behind for 10-9 win

LOVES PARK - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, scored five times in the second inning and led as much as 7-0, but gave up two five-run innings as the Rockford RiverHawks came from behind for a 10-9 win on Friday night at RiverHawks Stadium. Each team took two games in the four-game set.

The CornBelters broke on top first for the fourth straight game as Bobby Rinard and Steven Felix singled with one out in the opening frame, followed by a double steal and a sacrifice fly to right by Ernie Banks Jr. to score Rinard.

The Belters exploded in the second with five runs, as the first four batters reached via hit with six hits in the inning, and RBI's recorded by Jason Thompson, Ty Wiesemeyer and Steven Felix to increase the guest's lead to 6-0.

Normal added a run in the third inning with two outs on consecutive doubles by Jason Thompson and Ty Wiesemeyer extended the Belters' advantage to 7-0.

Rockford recorded its own explosion in the third inning, putting up five runs on three hits, two errors, a hit batsman and a walk to cut the Belters' lead to 7-5.

The CornBelters got a run back in the fourth by loading the bases with no one out, as J.B. Brown's sacrifice fly scored Steven Felix to give Normal an 8-5 lead.

The RiverHawks broke through with another big inning, as they loaded the bases with one out and cleared them with a three-run double by Michael Thomas to tie the game. Ted Obregon singled in another run, and after the inning was extended by an error, a balk scored the final Hawks run to give the hosts a 10-8 lead.

The CornBelters threatened in the ninth, scoring Andrew Cohn with an RBI single by Ty Wiesemeyer, but the Belters left the bases loaded to end the game.

Josh Joseph (1-4) took the loss in relief, as Andrew Armstrong (2-2) picked up the win. Garrett Granitz earned his seventh save.

The CornBelters return home for a two-day, three-game series against the River City Rascals. Left-hander Jacob Liedka (1-7, 4.24 ERA) starts on the mound for the CornBelters. Pre-game on WJBC.com is at 6:20 with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch. The series concludes with a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 5 p.m.
