Last time out.

For the second consecutive night, the Joliet Slammers got shut-out, this time 2-0, by the Schaumburg Boomers, dropping the series. At the completion of the contest, Joliet has not scored a run since Tuesday evening against Traverse City. Schaumburg took the lead in the bottom of the second. First baseman Steve McQuail led the inning off with a solo home run to make it 1-0. The Boomers notched their insurance run in the home half of the third when Jeremy Milons tripled and came home on a sacrifice fly by Karexon Sanchez. For the second straight evening, Slammers pitching threw a gem but the bats couldn't provide run support. Tommy Mendoza was stuck with a loss despite throwing seven innings on just two runs. Mike Barsotti threw a perfect eighth inning in relief. Alex Rivers threw seven innings of shutout ball for Schaumburg for the win.

For Starters.

Matt Sommo makes his debut for the Slammers tonight. He started the 2012 season with the Sioux Falls Pheasants of the American Association and went 1-1 with an 8.64 ERA in six games three, starts. Sommo's most recent outing was on July 22 against Washington as he went eight innings, scattering seven hits and only allowing three runs in a no-decision. He walked two and struck out six in the start. Sommo is a rookie who pitched at D-II University of New Haven during his collegiate career. He led all team starters in 2011 with a 4-1 record and a miniscule 1.29 ERA. Sommo struck out 38 batters in 49 innings while walking just 12.
