RiverHawks Announce Opening Roster
May 16, 2012 - Frontier League (FL)
Rockford RiverHawks News Release
LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Rockford RiverHawks have announced their Opening Night roster.
Ten players on the active roster return from last year's club, including third baseman Matt Greener and young outfielders Michael Hur and Jeremy Richter. Greener, a middle-of-the-order mainstay last year, hit .296. Hur homered in his first professional at-bat. Returning pitchers include left-hander Alex Szymanski, who went 5-4 with a 4.09 ERA and struck out a team-high 86 last season, and former Rockford College southpaw Kevin Patterson.
New faces include outfielders Brandon Anderson and Devin Shepherd, both of whom arrived as players to be named from Windy City during the offseason to complete last August's Jason James-Brett Durand trade. Anderson, a two-time Frontier League All-Star, hit .287 and stole a league-high 53 bases last season. Shepherd, a former St. Louis farmhand, won last year's FL Home Run Derby and, as a prep star, was the Most Valuable Player of the 2005 Aflac All-American High School Baseball Classic. Among the new hurlers is former Boston farmhand Mike Lee, who pitched for the Red Sox' Class AA Portland affiliate earlier this season.
Rockford opens the regular season at 7:05 p.m. Friday, May 18 at River City. The RiverHawks' home opener is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Friday, May 25 against Lake Erie. The Power Connection sponsors a postgame fireworks extravaganza.
The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, an independent professional baseball league in its 20th season. Games are broadcast live on WNTA (100.5 FM). Advertising and season-ticket information is available by calling (815) 885-2255. Fans can also visit www.rockfordriverhawks.com.
