Richmond RiverDogs News Release
RICHMOND, VA - The emotional roller coaster ride for the Richmond RiverDogs, players, fans, front office is finally over, with the end results being a pair of wins, the big sendoff of popular Head Coach Robbie S. Nichols and the debut of new Head Coach Kris Waltze. The RiverDogs took it to the Roanoke Valley Vipers by the score of 3-2 in regulation in front of 4,712 tonight, to extend their win streak to three games, nine of the last eleven and a .500 record for the first time this season (21-21-4,46 points). But this win did not come easy.
The RiverDogs fell behind in the first period on goals from Mike Wiggins and David-Alexandre Beauregard. The Dogs were flat as the Vipers outshot Richmond 15-6. Test #1 for the new head coach, and after the intermission team talk, the RiverDogs stormed back with three goals- Joey Bastien on the power play at 3:08 and just 33 seconds later Mike Oliveira tied the game at 2-2. The RiverDogs game winner was on the power play as the Vipers were caught deep in the RiverDogs end and as a result, Richmond had a 2-0 break. Mike Owens fed the puck to Lyon Porter and Porter dished to John DiPace and John poked it by the Viper goaltender to put the RiverDogs ahead for good, 3-2. The RiverDogs hung on for victory, giving new Head Coach Kris Waltze his first ever victory and the #1 Star of the game (RiverDogs coaches getting #1 Star has been a habit lately).
The RiverDogs will go on a long, six game road trip that will begin on Friday, February 10, at Elmira.
