Richmond RiverDogs News Release
THE WEEK THAT WAS:
January 27, 2005 vs. Motor City (4-3 L) The RiverDogs come back from the All-Star break with a pair of contests with the Motor City Mechanics. This game was a seesaw affair that saw the Mechanics scoring first before Brian Goudie tying it with a power play goal. Greg Bullock put the Mechanics in front 2-1 on an early goal in the second period. Mike Oliveira tied it up later in the period, second point of the game which extended his point-scoring streak to 10 games. Back came Motor City on a goal from Matt Smith and a 3-2 lead. Evgeny Lazarev tied the game with a power play goal as both teams left the ice for the third period, even-steven at 3-3. Adam Edinger scored at 4:35 of the third, which was the game winner. Attendance: 3,941.
January 28, 2006 vs. Motor City (4-3 SOL) The two teams met again for the re-match in front of 5,929 noisy, sign-waving fans and the partisan crowd was treated to an outstanding game by both clubs. Similar to the last game between the two sides, Motor City jumped out to a 2-1 lead on goals from Vlad Serov and Adam Edinger, sandwiched in was a goal from rookie Warren Cooper. For the next 42 minutes of close, tight checking hockey, John DiPace tied the score on a wrap-around past Mechanics goaltender Rod Branch that had the huge crowd on it's feet cheering. Peter Szabo put Motor City ahead 3-2 with 3:52 left in the final period. The RiverDogs put the pressure on and with 2:32 remaining, Motor City was penalized for a pair of infractions that gave Richmond a two-man advantage. Coach Robbie Nichols pulled goalkeeper Doug Groenestege for an extra attacker, giving the RiverDogs a 6-3 power play advantage- the move worked as Mike Oliveira scored the tying goal with 1:47 left, which brought the crowd on it's feet again and rocking! Regulation ended and the shootout took place. Adam Edinger scored the only goal for the Mechanics while Motor City's Rod Branch shutout the RiverDogs on all five attempts.
