Komets Host Jackals Saturday for Report Card Night

Fort Wayne, IN --- The lightest part of the Komet schedule continues this week with only 2 games scheduled for the weekend. The Komets will skate at Missouri Friday and then return home Saturday to host the Elmira Jackals at 7:30pm. After this weekend, the Komets will skate 4 games in 5 nights for 3 consecutive weeks. The Komets are slated for 14 games in 24 nights during February.

Komets clip Wings.....last week the Komets scored a 4-3 shootout win at Kalamazoo Saturday night in the only game scheduled. The Komets were led by Colin Chaulk who posted a goal in regulation and added a tally in the shootout. Chaulk's goal in regulation was the first Komet power play goal against Kalamazoo this season. Kevin Kurk picked up his 3rd win of the season stopping 44 of 47 shots in regulation and turning back 3 of 5 Kalamazoo shootout attempts. Kurk set new Komet UHL goaltender records of saves and shots faced in a period making 25 saves on 27 shots in the 3rd period. The Komets are 8-3-0 in their last 11 games and 16-6-0 (.727 point percentage) in their last 22 since Dec. 7 at Elmira.

Speaking of shootouts.....the Komets lead the UHL in shootout percentage at .485 (16 shootout goals on 33 attempts) while appearing in a UHL season low 6 shootouts after 40 games this season (4 wins, 2 losses).

K's at Missouri Friday.....the Komets will skate at Missouri Friday for the 6th meeting of the season and the 3rd of 6 at Missouri with the Komets holding a 4-1-0 series lead. Fort Wayne has won the last 4 straight games against the River Otters after winning the last meeting 5-1 at Fort Wayne Jan. 13. Missouri is 2-3-0 in their last 5 games after picking up former Komet Blake Stewart. Last Saturday (Jan. 28) the River Otters added former Komet Lonnie Loach (1989-90 and 1990-91 IHL) to their roster. Loach, 37, was head coach of the River Otters for the 2003-04 season after skating 4 seasons with Missouri (1999-2003). Also on Saturday the Otters relieved former Komet Kevin Kaminski (1990-91 IHL) of his coaching duties and have yet to name a successor. Missouri is coming off a 3-2 home win against Port Huron Saturday. The Komets and the River Otters are both idle until their match Friday.

Jackals roam on coliseum ice Saturday.....this Saturday's Komet home game against Elmira at 7:30pm will be the Jackal's only visit of the season to Fort Wayne and the last of 2 meetings this season. The Komets turned back the Jackals at Elmira Dec. 7. Elmira is 2-3-0 in their last 5 outings and are riding a 2-game losing skid after posting a 1-2-0 record this past weekend. The Jackals skate at Quad City Friday before heading to Fort Wayne Saturday.

A's for Komet tickets.....this Saturday's game against Elmira features the annual Comcast Report Card Night. Students with "A" or "A equivalent" proof will be admitted free to the Komet game against Elmira. Students may get their tickets at the Coliseum Ticket Office and are encouraged to get tickets early in advance.

Comcast will make a donation to the Literacy Alliance for every "A" student in attendance.

Kean retires.....defenseman Jason Kean has decided to retire from pro hockey effective immediately. Kean, 26, began his career with the Komets last season skating 46 games (11g, 22a). This season was his 3rd as a pro with Kean appearing in only 8 games (2a, 2pts) to date due to injury. Kean's last game was Nov. 18 vs Muskegon.

Looking for 500, and other milestones.....Greg Puhalski has 498 career wins as a head coach....Rob Guinn (D) has 98 UHL assists.....Matt Hunter (LW) has skated 99 pro (all UHL) games.....Kelly Miller (C) has appeared in 297 pro games.

Komets on the air.....the Komet games this weekend are slated to air with Bob Chase calling the action radio-rinkside in his 53rd consecutive season behind the Komet microphone. Fans can join Bob for the Sprint P.C.S. Pregame Show 15 minutes prior to the faceoff of each Komet game broadcast. Friday's game at Missouri and Saturday night's home tilt against Elmira will be broadcast on WOWO Radio AM 1190. All games can also be heard worldwide on the internet at www.komets.com at Comcast KometCast.
