CHARLESTON, SC -- Jose Tabata returned from the MLB All-Star Futures Game just in time to drive home the game winning run as Charleston walked past Savannah in come-from-behind fashion, 4-3, in South Atlantic League action Monday afternoon in front of 4,127 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
Three RiverDogs scored in the eighth inning - two on bases loaded walks and one via a hit by pitch to bring Charleston back from a 3-1 deficit.
With the victory, Charleston improves to 11-8 in the second half and 49-40 overall while Savannah falls to 9-10 in the second half and 36-52 overall. The RiverDogs now have a 12-2 record against the Sand Gnats at Riley Park this season.
Charleston sweeps the three-game series, its third series sweep of the season, and the squad has now won five straight games. The RiverDogs are now nine games over .500 overall, a season-high mark.
With the Sand Gnats leading 3-1 in the eighth inning, Savannah inserted left-handed reliever Jacobo Meque (1-2), who gave up an inning-opening single to Reegie Corona. After Ben Jones drew a walk, Marcos Vechionacci singled to load the bases, and C.J. Henry walked to make the score 3-2.
Charleston manager Bill Mosiello substituted Tony Roth to pinch-run for Jones, who then scored the tying run when Meque walked Eduardo Nunez. Meque (1-2) failed to retire any of the five batters he faced, walking three and allowing two base hits.
Savannah then sent Josh Perrault to the mound and he forced Tim Battle to pop up. However, Tabata, who plane returning from Pittsburgh landing after the game had begun, pinch hit for Irwil Rojas and was hit by a pitch to plate the go-ahead run.
R.J. Swindle, the former Charleston Southern Buccaneer, earned his first save of the season as he pitched a perfect ninth inning, facing the minimum of three batters and fanning one.
Charleston lit the scoreboard in the first inning on Corona's RBI double against Savannah starter Bryan Lambert, Jr., plating Austin Jackson who led off with a single.
Savannah responded in the second against spot starter Eric Wordekemper with a solo home run by Scott Schade, his sixth, to tie the score at one.
The Sand Gnats took a 2-1 in the sixth inning on Edgardo Baez's third home run of the season, and stretched the lead to 3-1 in the seventh when Robert Sandora recorded his first South Atlantic League hit and RBI when he plated Alex Nunez with an RBI single off Steve Schroer.
Charleston's Jim Conroy (3-4) was credited with the victory as he pitched the eighth inning and allowed one hit. He was one of five RiverDogs pitchers for the game, following Wordekemper (three innings), Bryan Rueger (2.2 innings) and Schroer (1.1).
Charleston enjoys Tuesday off before heading to Rome for a three-game series against the first-half Southern Division champions. Game one Wednesday night begins at 7:00 pm, with right-hander Bryan Villalona (7-4, 3.59 ERA) slated to take the hill.
