Columbus, GA - The devastating blow was a seventh inning grand slam by 3B Eric Campbell, leading the Rome Braves (8-11) over the Columbus Catfish (10-9) by a score of 7-3 at Golden Park on Monday. The Catfish put together a three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning but fell short in the end. Despite the loss Columbus won two-of-three games in the series.

The first two Rome runs scored in the top of the second inning. RF Jamie Romak drove in one with a single. 1B Josh Morris later scored on a double play.

Both starters settled in until the seventh inning. The Braves led off the inning with three straight singles before LHP David Pfeiffer was replaced by RHP Arismendy Castillo. After one out was recorded Campbell hit the grand slam for a 6-0 lead. The next batter, C Cody Clark, was hit by a Castillo pitch, leading to a bench-clearing confrontation that quickly calmed as both teams were warned by the umpires. Rome tacked on one more run for a 7-0 lead.

3B Russ Mitchell led off the bottom of the seventh and was hit by the first pitch from LHP Jake Stevens. Mitchell took first base and Stevens was ejected without further incident. The Catfish stayed focused to piece together a rally. With two runners on 2B Travis Denker singled to left field, where LF Quentin Davis misplayed the ball allowing Mitchell to score. C Tony Harper later drove a double into the gap in left-center, scoring two runs to make the score 7-3.

Pfeiffer (1-3) was charged with five runs, three of which were earned, in six-plus innings and took the loss. Stevens (2-1) gave up just one run in six innings and earned the win.

Denker went 3-for-3 with a walk and a run. 1B Jason Mooneyham reached base when he was hit by a pitch in the seventh inning. He has reached base in 32 straight games, the longest such streak in the SAL this season. Mooneyham has also reached base in each of 26 home games.

After taking Tuesday off the Catfish will play three road games against the Savannah Sand Gnats beginning Wednesday. For more information call (706) 571-8866 or visit ColumbusCatfish.com.
