Charleston RiverDogs News Release

Adam Olbrychowski hurled five shutout innings and Charleston shut out Hickory for a second straight night as the RiverDogs slipped past the Crawdads, 2-0, in South Atlantic League action Saturday night in front of 4,410 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

Charleston's pitching staff has dominated the first three nights of the series, holding the Crawdads to only one run total in the three contests. Hickory has not scored a run over the last 24 innings in the series, with the lone tally coming in the third inning on Thursday night.

The RiverDogs improve to 7-0 against Hickory this season and 36-19 overall. Charleston has now won four straight contests and eight of its last 11. First-place Asheville won its seventh straight tonight, a 6-4 victory at Rome, so Charleston remains 2.5 games behind the Tourists in the first-half standings with 15 remaining.

Hickory drops its fourth consecutive decision and falls to 27-29 on the season.

The Pepperdine-product Olbrychowski (3-2) allowed just two base hits with no walks and three strikeouts in his first start since May 3. He retired 10 straight batters between the first and fourth innings, and faced just one batter over the minimum in his five innings of work.

Olbrychowski has defeated the Crawdads twice this month, surrendering just two runs on five hits in 12.0 innings of work against Hickory with no walks and 10 strikeouts.

Charleston got two unearned runs on two Hickory errors in the second inning off Crawdads starter Rafael De Los Santos (2-3). Austin Romine led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on Brian Baisley's fly ball that hit off the glove of right fielder Keanon Simon for another double.

Then with two outs, Austin Krum slapped a ground ball up the middle that ticked off the glove of shortstop Jose De Los Santos into centerfield and scored each runner. After much deliberation, the play was ruled a two-run error on De Los Santos.

That would be the only offensive threat the RiverDogs had all night, as they did not collect another base hit after the second inning. De Los Santos (2-3) went 4.2 innings for Hickory allowing the two tallies on three hits while walking one and fanning three.

Southpaw Wilkins De La Rosa threw three scoreless innings in relief of Olbrychowski, while Jonathan Ortiz notched his 16th save of the season with a scoreless ninth.

Hickory managed just five base hits by five different players

The finale of this four-game series is scheduled for a 4:05 pm first pitch on Sunday afternoon. Right-hander Lance Pendleton (4-2, 2.08 ERA), who has thrown 26.2 consecutive scoreless innings over his last five starts, is slated to start for Charleston. He will be opposed by right-hander Brad Clapp (0-4, 4.40) for Hickory.
