Richmond RiverDogs News Release
TONIGHT'S MATCHUP: The season opener for both clubs. The first of four meetings, three here. Richmond was 5-4 vs. the Beacons last season, but Port Huron won three of five at the Coliseum. Brian Goudie had eight points vs. the Beacons. Casey Harris had nine vs. the âDogs last season.
LAST ACTION: Richmond edged Missouri 4-3 in a shootout Saturday in Roanoke. It was the âDogs only pre-season game. The âDogs rallied after falling behind twice. Richmond carried a lead into the third period before Barrie Moore scored his second goal to force a shootout. Mark Turner scored the only goal of the shootout to give Richmond the win. Jeff Sanger stopped all five River Otters in the shootout. David Brosseau, David Hymovitz, and Jami Yoder scored for Richmond in regulation. The Beacons finished their pre-season with a 4-2 loss to Flint. Aaron Brand scored twice for Port Huron.
'DOG BITES: The âDogs roster stands at 19 (11 forwards, six defensemen, two goalies). The âDogs are carrying the UHL limit of seven veterans and have five rookies on the club. Mark Turner has been named the âDogs captain. Richmond signed RW Jason Bone Wednesday. Richmond has now played three pre-season games in club history and all three ended in shootouts. The âDogs open with three straight home games, then play six of seven on the road. Richmond is the defending Eastern Conference regular season champion. The UHL will operate with three divisions this season. The âDogs will compete in the Eastern Division with Adirondack, Danbury, and Elmira. Richmond has six players back from last season: Brian Goudie, Luch Nasato, J.F. Picard, Francis Belanger, David Brosseau, and J.J. Wrobel. The âDogs led the UHL in penalty minutes last season. The âDogs roster includes 13 Canadians (five from Quebec) and six Americans.
BEACONS NOTES: Port Huron welcomes new head coach Rick Adduono. He coached the âDogs Mark Turner in Greensboro last season. Long-time Roanoke goaltender Daniel Berthiaume signed with the Beacons this week, as did former Richmond scoring ace Andrew Shier, who will join the Beacons next week. The Beacons were 0-2 in pre-season. They were 38-31-7 last year and lost to Elmira in the Eastern Conference Finals. The Beacons have six returnees from last season. There are eight rookies in the Beacons lineup.
