Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - Three RiverDog pitchers combined on a four-hitter and Ben Jones smashed his team-leading 18th home run to lead Charleston to an 8-2 victory over the Kannapolis Intimidators in South Atlantic League action Thursday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
Charleston is now 63-54, matching the team's best overall record this season at nine games above .500. The RiverDogs had reached that mark one other time, July 10 at 49-40, and the team is now 14-14 under new manager Pat Roessler since taking the helm following that date.
Play was halted in the fourth inning when lightning hovered over the stadium followed by a steady rain, causing a delay of 1:45.
With the victory, the RiverDogs have now won 12 of their last 16 games and have taken eight of nine games from Kannapolis this season. In the process, Charleston improves to 25-22 in the second half while Kannapolis slips to 38-77 overall and 18-27 in the second half.
The fans barely got comfortable in their seats before Kannapolis pushed two runs across in the game's opening inning when Aaron Cunningham slammed a 2-run home run to left field with one out. Charleston would score the game's final eight runs and the Intimidators would record only two more hits the rest of the way.
In the bottom of the second the RiverDogs scored four unearned runs on two hits against Kannapolis starter Ricky Brooks (8-9), all coming with two outs.
Following a critical error by third baseman Juan Camacho, Austin Jackson connected with an RBI single through the left side that drove home one run. The tying run then scored when Kevin Nelson came home on a passed ball.
Tim Battle's 2-run bloop double to right field concluded the inning's scoring parade.
Following the rain delay, the RiverDogs tacked on four more tallies. In the sixth inning, Battle tripled to center, barely missing a home run, and scored on Reegie Corona's ground out to second base. Jones followed with a solo home run to left field for his 18th round-tripper of the season, tying him for second in the league.
Battle went 3-4 to pace Charleston, while Jones and Irwil Rojas each had two hits. Cunningham walked twice for Kannapolis in addition to his team-leading 11th long ball.
Game 2 of this four-game series is set for Friday night at 7:05 p.m. with Charleston sending lefty Garrett Patterson (1-4, 4.93 ERA) to the mound while Kannapolis counters with lefty Clayton Richard (6-5, 3.34 ERA).
