Rome Emperors News Release
Rome, GA -The Augusta GreenJackets threw a combined no hitter to defeat the Rome Braves 5-0 in front of 3,639 fans Thursday night at State Mutual Stadium. It was the first no-hitter against the Rome Braves in their history.
GreenJackets starting pitcher Sergio Romo went seven strong innings retiring all hitters with the exception of a hit batsman in the first. Augusta relievers David Quinowski and Osiris Matos came in the eighth and ninth innings to preserve the no hitter.
The GreenJackets got on the board in the second inning when Antoan Richardson grounded into a force out to bring home Barry Gunther who walked earlier. Augusta was up 1-0. The GreenJackets would later add another run in the sixth to take a 2-0 lead, when Antoan Richardson bunted his way on to first and then advanced to third on a throwing error by Jamie Trejo. Richardson would score on the second throwing error of the inning by Derrick Arnold. Augusta would add three more runs in the top of the ninth to make the final score 5-0.
Rome starter Dustin Evans (2-2) took the loss for the Braves giving up just one earned run in five and one third innings of work. Evans left the game in the sixth inning with a strained groin. Augusta's Sergio Romo improved to 10-2 on the year with a masterful performance on the mound tonight.
Rome tries to even up the series tomorrow night at State Mutual Stadium. Mayberry Deputy will be on hand entertaining the fans presented by South 107. For ticket information call 706-378-5144 or log on to www.romebraves.com.
