Infield singles defeat Drive 4-3

Columbus Catfish News Release


Columbus, GA - The Columbus Catfish (20-27) scored in the eighth and ninth innings to beat the Greenville Drive (26-21) 4-3 Thursday at Golden Park. The Catfish used two infield singles and an error to score a game-winning unearned run in the ninth inning.

CF Yahmed Yema hit a solo home run in the first inning to give Greenville a 1-0 lead. It was his eighth blast of the season.

DH Bridger Hunt led off the Catfish half of the inning with a double. He moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by CF Adam Godwin. Hunt then scored on a double by 2B Travis Denker. Columbus took a 2-1 lead in the fourth when Denker scored on a sacrifice fly by LF Lucas May.

Greenville took a 3-2 lead with two two-out runs in the fifth inning. Christian Lara drove in one with a double, followed by a Michael Hall RBI single.

In the bottom of the eighth inning Columbus tied the game at 3-3 on a 1B David Sutherland looping single to center field that scored Denker.

With the game tied at three runs apiece and one out in the ninth inning LF Juan Rivera hustled down the line on a ground ball to second base. 2B Dominic Ramos threw the ball away at first, allowing Rivera to move to second. Hunt then advanced Rivera to third base on a ground ball to first base. With two down SS Ivan DeJesus hit a chopper past the pitcher for another infield single as Rivera crossed the plate with the game winner.

In the first seven innings RHP Dave Horlacher gave up three runs on just three hits and two walks while striking out six. RHP Ramon Troncoso (4-0) pitched a scoreless top of the ninth inning to earn the win. RHP Blake Maxwell (6-3) allowed the unearned run in the ninth and lost.
