
Rivera Named Batter of the Week

WICHITA, KS- Wichita Wingnuts first baseman Carlos Rivera has been named the American Association's Pointstreak Batter of the Week for August 1st-7th.
Rivera collected a hit in all seven games last week, going 15 for 32 (.469) with four doubles, two home runs, 10 RBI, and 10 runs scored. On Saturday night at Winnipeg, Rivera powered the Wingnuts' offense in a 15-4 win at Shaw Park. The Fajardo, Puerto Rico native went 5 for 6 with two home runs, three RBI, and tied an American Association single-game record with five runs.
The 33-year old slugger has hit safely in all nine games since joining the Wingnuts on August 6th at Sioux City. Rivera is hitting .425 during that stretch with two home runs, 11 RBI, and 11 runs scored.
Rivera joined the Wingnuts after another succesful stint in the Mexican League, hitting .311 with 11 home runs and 62 RBI in 103 games for the Petroleros de Minatitlan. Rivera joined the Wingnuts in similar fashion last season and hit .372 with six home runs in 28 games for Wichita. Rivera was originally drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 10th round in 1996 and spent parts of two seasons in the Major Leagues with Pittsburgh in 2003 and 2004.
It marks the second weekly award the Wingnuts have won this season. Nick Singleton was named Pitcher of the Week for May 23rd-29th.
The Wingnuts are currently battling three other teams for the final three American Association playoff spots. Wichita trails Gary SouthShore by 2.0 games in the Central Division, and St. Paul by 1.0 game in the wild card race. The Wingnuts are also 3.0 games back of the North Division-leading Winnipeg Goldeyes in the overall standings. Heading into Monday, all four clubs are down to their final 14 games of the season.
