St. Paul Saints News Release
WINNIPEG, MB (August 15, 2011) - The runs kept coming and coming and by the time they stopped the St. Paul Saints found themselves beaten badly by the Winnipeg Goldeyes 15-2, giving up the most runs and hits (20) in a game this season, on Monday night at Shaw Park.
The Goldeyes had eight doubles, a triple and three homers and everyone collected a hit by the third inning. Saints starter Donald Brandt gave up a career tying high 12 hits, a record he set in his last start. The 10 earned runs were a career high.
The Saints began the game shorthanded when Jonathan Van Every wasn't in the starting lineup because of an injury prior to the game and they were without Argelis Nunez, who they traded following Sunday night's game in Fargo, but Nunez decided he wasn't going to report to his team, but he was still off the Saints roster. The Saints were forced to start pitcher Jake Schmidt in right field.
The Goldeyes came out of the gates with three in the first when Price Kendall led off with a single and with one out Jon Weber doubled him home to make it 1-0. It was the first of three doubles for Weber. Brian Myrow followed with an RBI double to make it 2-0. Two batters later an RBI single from Fehlandt Lentini made it 3-0.
In his two previous starts against the Goldeyes, Brandt was roughed up in the first inning, but settled down after that. The Goldeyes made sure he didn't get comfortable on Monday night as they scored two more in the second on an RBI double from Weber and a sacrifice fly from Myrow, making it 5-0.
The Saints gave up the most runs in an inning this season when seven came across in the third, as the first seven hitters reached on a base hit. The inning saw two homers, four doubles and two singles with 11 men coming to the plate.
Goldeyes starter Ace Walker pitched a complete game and became the winningest pitcher in Goldeyes history. He allowed two runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out seven.
The Saints did have a bright spot as Donald Blunt collected his first professional hit, an infield single to third in the ninth.
The same two teams meet Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. at Shaw Park in game two of the three game series. The Saints are TBA and the Goldeyes send LHP Isaac Hess (6-3, 4.19) to the mound. The game can be heard live on Relevant Radio 1330.
