Kaminsky Goes Seven Strong, Captains Top RailCats 9-3

GARY, In.---Captains starter Alex Kaminsky (W, 6-2) dazzled for his second straight outing, allowing one run in seven innings while striking out seven as Shreveport-Bossier beat the Gary SouthShore RailCats 9-3 at U.S. Steel Yard Monday night. Alex Cowart went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI while Palmer Karr Jr. went 2-for-4 with two runs and his 11th home run of the season to lead the Captains offense.

Robert Perry also went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Brian Peterson added a pair of RBIs and Jonathan Johnson had two hits as Shreveport-Bossier had 15 for the game including seven for extra bases.

The Captains scored first off Gary SouthShore starter Carlos Rivas (L, 5-1) in the first when Bryan Sabatella singled home Perry with the game's first run. Shreveport-Bossier made it 2-0 in the fifth on a Mike Provencher double scoring Cowart, who had doubled to lead off the frame.

Brian Peterson's two-run double in the sixth made it 4-0. Cowart would add on an RBI single in the next at bat. Later in the frame, Perry scored Cowart with a base hit to make it 6-0.

Christian Guerrero doubled with one out in the sixth off Kaminsky and scored the RailCats first run on a base hit by Brian Kolb.

Karr Jr. homered off James Baker to lead off the seventh. Chad Gabriel would double and score on Cowart's base hit, making it 8-1. Perry doubled to lead off the eighth and scored on Karr's sacrifice fly. Gary added a run in the eighth. In the ninth, Lee Henry came on to pitch for the Captains and allowed a hit and two walks to load the bases with two outs. He then hit Gary pinch hitter Craig Maddox to make it 9-3. However, he would strike out the side by K'ing Chris Carrara with the bases loaded to end the game.

Rivas left the game after only two innings, allowing one run on three hits while walking one and striking out four. Reliever Nolan Nicholson gave up the majority of the Shreveport-Bossier runs, going 3.1 innings and allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits.

With the win, the Captains improve to 40-46 on the year. They trail St. Paul by 7.5 games in the wild card race with 14 to play. Game five of the series takes place Tuesday Aug. 16 at U.S. Steel Yard. Gary throws righthander Scott Shaw (9-4, 4.90) against Captains righthander Osvaldo Rodriguez (5-4, 5.78). First pitch is at 7:10 p.m.
