River Riders Defeat the Doughboys 6-5

ELIZABETHTON, TN - The River Riders defeated the Johnson City Doughboys 6-5 in Elizabethton at Northeast Community Credit Union for their first home victory in 12 days. River Rider (12-10) Starting RHP Drew Gillespie (Southeastern) and relievers RHP Jordan Leasure (Tampa) and RHP Nathan Williams (Florence Darlington) combined for 16 strikeouts in the victory.

Gillespie needed 43 pitches to throw four innings of two hits and struck out seven without allowing a walk or a run.

Doughboy starting RHP Steven Casey (Florida International) pitched 3.1 innings before being pulled and gave up one earned run while striking out six. Shortstop Marcus Brown (Oklahoma State University) singled against Brown and stole second. With one out and relief pitcher LHP Miguel Fulgencio (Cowley CC) on the mound, left fielder Sam Thompson (TCU) singled to score Brown from second.

Leasure came in relief of Gillespie in the top of the fifth inning and needed 29 pitches to strikeout five batters over three innings without allowing a walk, hit, or run.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Elizabethton scored three runs. Chase Adkison (OSU) reached third on an error by third baseman Ashton King (ETSU) and scored Brown from third. With one out, centerfielder DJ Sullivan (Florence-Darlington Tech) grounded out to second to score Adkison. Catcher Knox Preston (Wabash Valley) finished scoring with his first extra-base hit of the season, an RBI double to score Thompson.

Johnson City scored five runs in the top of the seventh and was punctuated with a third grand slam by Johnson City's first baseman Joe Vetrano (Boston College).

RHP Nathan Williams came in with two outs in the bottom of the eighth and struck out King. In the top of the ninth, Williams gave up a lead-off double to centerfielder Jaxson Crull (OSU). Williams struck out three to end the game.

The River Riders will complete the series against the Doughboys tomorrow at Northeast Community Credit Union Ballpark. Wednesday is all you can eat Wednesday at NCCU ballpark fans can enjoy all you can eat hot dogs, hamburgers, and drinks all evening!
