
River Rats Topple Sound Tigers

Ryan Byada scored a hat-trick and Shane Willis added two goals and three assists to lift the Albany River Rats to a 7-3 triumph over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers before 2,827 fans at the Arena at Harbor Yard on Sunday afternoon. Albany won for the eighth time in its last 11 outings to improve to 18-14-2-0 and the Sound Tigers dropped their fourth straight to slip to 13-16-1-3.
Sound Tiger Frans Nielsen extended his point streak to nine games, within three of tying the franchise record, with a pair of assists. In only his second game with the Sound Tigers Jamie Fraser scored his first American Hockey League goal, but the River Rats led throughout the game.
Bayda doubled his goal-scoring total for the season to six by notching his third of the night just 5:37 into the second period. Bayda also had an assist, Keith Aucoin had three assists and former Sound Tiger Ben Guite had a goal and an assist. Johnny Boychuk also scored for Albany, which opened a 7-1 lead, marking the first time the Sound Tigers have allowed more than six goals in a game this season. The River Rats led 4-1 after one period.
Eric Boguniecki and Jeff Tambellini, whose power play tally had tied the game 1-1 early in the first, scored Sound Tiger goals.
Albany outshot Bridgeport 38-23 as Michael Mole stopped 31 Albany shots and his counterpart, Tyler Weiman, made 20 saves. The River Rats were 1-for-8 against Bridgeport's league best penalty killing unit. The Sound Tigers were 1-for-3 on the man advantage.
The Sound Tigers visit Albany on Friday, Jan. 5 and return to the Arena at Harbor Yard to host the Philadelphia Phantoms on Wednesday, Jan. 10 at 7:30 p.m. for the first of four straight home games.
