River Otters Smother Fury in 3-2 Victory

December 12, 2004 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Missouri River Otters News Release

The River Otters closed out a three-win week with a 3-2 victory against the Muskegon Fury Sunday afternoon at the Family Arena.

Muskegon scored the first goal of the game on an awkward looking play. David Ambler won a face-off back to Nigel Hawryliw, and the Muskegon winger slid a tricky shot underneath River Otters goaltender Jason Tapp. The turning point of the game came with five minutes remaining in the first period. The Fury were dominating the game, leading in shots 9-1, but the Otters tied the score when Josh Legge beat Fury goaltender Clayton Pool with a bad-angle wrister. Three minutes later the Otters grabbed the lead for good. Chris Bell worked around a Fury defenseman and fed a perfect pass to Charlie Blyth, who finessed a shot between Pool and the far post.

Missouri scored the only goal in a fight-filled second period. While on the power play, Bob Rapoza sent a shot toward the net from the point, and Mark Odut expertly deflected the puck behind Pool.

The Fury put a dent into the Otters lead with four minutes remaining in the final period. Colin Embley played a puck to Kevin Haupt at the point, and the Fury defensemen ripped a low slapshot behind Tapp. That was as close as Muskegon got, however, and the River Otters skated off with the victory.

Jason Tapp made 22 saves for his seventh win of the season, and was named the game's first star. The River Otters next game is Wednesday, December 15 against the Fort Wayne Komets. The puck drops at 7:05 CST, and all the action can be heard on KSLQ 104.5 FM and the B2 webcast at www.riverotters.com.
