River Otters Smoke Komets 3-0; Tapp Records Seventh Shutout

February 12, 2005 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Missouri River Otters News Release

Jason Tapp tied a franchise record with his seventh shutout of the season, and the Missouri River Otters ended the Fort Wayne Komets ten-game unbeaten streak with a 3-0 victory Saturday night in front of 5,637 fans at the Family Arena.

The River Otters scored the only goal in the first period, and it came on a terrific play. Jim Montgomery took a pass from Barret Jackman in the neutral zone and skated into the Komets zone. Montgomery went around a Fort Wayne defenseman and fired a low wrist-shot that beat Tyler Masters before he had time to react.

The River Otters dominated the second period and extended their lead to three goals. The first was the result of a great fore-checking job by Ryan Johnson, who stole the puck from a Komets defenseman and fed a pass to Charlie Blyth in front of the net. Blyth made no mistake, roofing a wrist-shot for his 13th goal of the season. The goal tied Blyth with Jeremy Rebek for 4th on the River Otters all-time scoring list. Johnson also helped create the third goal, as he skated past two Fort Wayne Komets and nearly beat Masters with a shot. The rebound came to Jackman, who ripped the puck behind Masters for his first goal as a River Otter.

No one scored in the final period, and the River Otters won 3-0. Tapp tied the River Otters franchise record with his seventh shutout this season, making 27 saves. Masters made 29 saves in defeat.

The River Otters will travel to Fort Wayne to take on the Komets Sunday at the Allen County Coliseum. The puck drops at 5:00 EST, and all the action can be heard on KSLQ 104.5 FM and the B2 Webcast at www.riverotters.com.
