San Diego Riptide News Release
SAN DIEGO - With a quarter of the season already in the books, the Riptide continued to make modifications to their roster in hopes of turning around a 1-4 start. San Diego was assigned 38-year-old kicker Rich Ehmke, by the league office and activated quarterback Kevin Feterik from the injured reserve.
After another tough loss that saw the Riptide drop a one-point game in overtime to the division leading Hawaiian Islanders after missing two extra points and a 26-yard field goal attempt, Head Coach Mouse Davis added some proven experience to help turn around the kicking unit, adding one of the league's oldest players in Ehmke.
A San Diego native, Ehmke played junior college football at Grossmont College, where he took home Junior College All-State and All-America honors and was 25-of-38 on field goal attempts and 46-of-49 on point after touchdowns. He went on to play at Eastern Illinois, where he was an All-Gateway Conference selection twice and an NCAA Division I-AA All-American his senior year connecting on 30-of-47 field goals and 62-of-65 extra points.
"With Rich, we're adding a guy with a lot of experience and a proven track record of success," Davis said. "He kicked in the arenafootball2 last year for the Albany Conquest and the Quad City Steamwheelers and was very successful. Hopefully this move will sure up our kicking game for the rest of the season."
San Diego also activated Feterik this week after a four-week stint on the injured reserve. Feterik was impressive in Week One against the Arkansas Twisters, coming off the bench early in the third quarter to lead the Riptide to within three points with under a minute to play, completing 4-of-5 passes for 53 yards and two touchdowns. The performance earned him his first career arenafootball2 start in Week Two against the Green Bay Blizzard the following week. In that game he completed 9-of-17 passes for 96 yards and two touchdowns, but left in the second quarter with a finger injury. With incumbent starter Kane Clauch putting up solid numbers, including 20 touchdown passes over his last four games, Feterik will serve as the backup this week.
"Kane's going to remain our starter. He's played extremely well the last several weeks, but we're certainly happy to have Feterik back and healthy to come off the bench if need be," Davis said.
The Riptide also made several other moves, placing quarterback Tony Corbin on the short-term IR list with a sore left shoulder and reassigning kicker Chris Arnce to the league office. Arnce played two games for the Riptide going 1-of-3 on field goal attempts and 8-for-12 on extra points.
The âTide will take on the Bakersfield Blitz this Saturday at Centennial Garden in Bakersfield before returning home on May 22 to take on the two-time af2 champion Quad City Steamwheelers. The first 3,000 fans in attendance will receive free Riptide ballcaps, courtesy of Assil and Flowers Vision Center.
