Week seven Friday night matchups

May 13, 2004 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

OKLAHOMA CITY YARD DAWGZ (4-1) AT GREEN BAY BLIZZARD (2-3)
FRIDAY, MAY 14, 2004 - RESCH CENTER (8,600) 8:30 P.M. ET

Fresh off of a 31-point victory over Laredo last week, the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz travel to Wisconsin to face the Green Bay Blizzard. The main reason the Yard Dawgz feature the league's leading offense is quarterback CRAIG STRICKLAND. Strickland has thrown 30 touchdown passes while only having two passes picked off. His passing rating of 126.6 leads the league and is more than six points above the second rated passer. TIMON MARSHALL is the second leading receiver for the Yard Dawgz and has eleven receiving touchdowns along with two kickoff returns for touchdowns. The Oklahoma City defense has some top 'Dawgz' of their own. Their eighteen sacks on the season is first in the af2. DREW MITCHELL, who is tied for second in the af2 with 3.5 sacks, and AL HUNT, who leads the team in tackles, leads this defensive attack. For the Blizzard, RANDALL LANE headlines the show. Lane is tied for the league lead in scoring (17 touchdowns for 102 points) and leads the league in receiving yards per game with 138.6. On top of all of this, Lane also adds eighteen kick returns for 306 yards, which leads the Blizzard. Last week CHRIS GREISEN found Lane three times to pull Green Bay within one game of .500. If Green Bay is going to reach .500 they will need to at least contain the Yard Dawgz' offense. This will be the responsibility of ROOSE WILLIAMS (24 tackles and six pass breakups), RONNIE WASHBURN (one sack and two recovered fumbles) along with the rest of the Blizzard defense. This will be the only meeting between these two squads this season.

FLORIDA FIRECATS (3-2) AT BIRMINGHAM STEELDOGS (4-1)
FRIDAY, MAY 14, 2004 - BJCC (16,000) 8:30 P.M. ET

In their third of three straight home games, the Birmingham Steeldogs welcome the Florida Firecats to town. The Steeldogs have quietly built a 4-1 record after losing their first game of the season to Bossier-Shreveport. Although the combined record of the four teams Birmingham has defeated is 4-11, the Steeldogs have dominated in these games winning by an average of 23.5 points. The Firecats are fresh off a big win of their own, a 39-point victory over the Columbus Wardogs. The Firecats would welcome a similar victory over this pack of dogs from Birmingham. To get this done the Firecats will rely on the legs of STEVE GORRIE. Gorrie leads the af2 in rushing with 148 yards, including six touchdowns. BRENT BURNSIDE is the ironman of the Firecats, leading the team in interceptions with two and ranking third in receptions with eighteen. KEN MASTROLE makes the Firecats go, throwing 29 touchdown passes and only three interceptions on the season earning him a 116.7 passing ratings, third best in the league. Mastrole will have to look out for reigning ADT Defensive Player of the Week ANTHONY JORDAN. Jordan picked off three passes last week and leads the league with six interceptions on the season. He is just part of the Steeldogs' strong defense. JERRY TURNER (four sacks, tied for the league lead) leads a Steeldogs pass rush that is tied for fifth in the af2 with ten sacks. This pass rush will get a test from the Firecats' offensive line which his only yielded two sacks the entire season, tied for tops in the league. Birmingham and Florida will meet once more this season, July 10 at TECO Arena in Florida.
