
Law Bring In Fresh Faces

LAREDO, Texas â The Laredo Law were assigned three new players today by the arenafootball2 league office. The Law picked up former UTEP Miner Trey Merkins, along with help up front on the line and in the secondary. The Law host the defending ArenaCup champion Tulsa Talons this Saturday night at the Laredo Entertainment Center at 7:30 p.m. Prior to the game the Law will celebrate Youth Day starting at 3 p.m. in the LEC parking lot. Merkins played for the Miners on their 2000 Western Athletic Conference Championship team. The 6'0", 240-pound fullback was an All-WAC performer after leading the team with 106 total tackles as a senior, including 63 solo stops. He also produced 12 tackles for losses, 2.5 sacks, five pass breakups, two interceptions, and forced four fumbles. Father, Guido, played at Sam Houston State and was noted as a special teams ace for the New Orleans Saints and Houston Oilers in the NFL.
"I wanted to get Trey in here right from the start of the season," said Law head coach Scot Maynard. "He was finishing up school and we are glad to have him. He will bring us depth at the fullback-linebacker position."
Also assigned were 6'1" 185-pound wide receiver-defensive back Greg Hill, and 6'3" 280-pound offensive-defensive lineman Bobby Collins.
Hill played college football at C.W. Post in Long Island, New York.
Collins played at South Carolina State from 1999-2003. He started his career playing defensive end, then finished up on the other side of the ball at offensive tackle. Was an All-Mid Eastern Athletic Conference selection at offensive line in 2002. In 2003 Collins helped the NCAA Division I-AA Bulldogs to an 8-4 record. Originally hails from Sumter, South Carolina. Played football and ran track at Sumter High. Was an All-State selection on the gridiron.
"I appreciate the chance to play professionally," said Collins. "I hope this opportunity leads to other chances down the road."
The Law placed OL/DL Rod Jones and Jason Cedeno on reassignment. OL/DL Joe Strandhardt was placed on the short term injured reserve.

Albert Lucas will perform this weekend. Lucas has worked the NBA Finals, NHL Stanley Cup Finals, the NHL All-Star Game, and the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. Lucas has also performed at the White House and before the Emperor of Japan. He holds 24 different Guinness Book of World Records for juggling, including the world record for juggling 13 rings simultaneously.
