
Rieder Scores a Pair in Rangers 4-3 Win

Two goals from Tobias Rieder led the Kitchener Rangers to a 4-3 victory over the London Knights on Sunday afternoon. Rieder has eight goals in his last five games and has points in 12 consecutive contests. Ben Thomson and Matt Puempel also scored for Kitchener, and Josh Leivo recorded two assists, extending his recent point streak to a 12th game.
Tobias Rieder extended his recent scoring streak to five games with his 23rd goal of the season, putting the Rangers ahead 1-0 at the 7:41 mark of the opening frame. Joshua Leivo forced a turnover and carried the puck into the London zone where it ended up on the stick of Ben Fanelli. His shot was stopped by Anthony Stolarz, but the German winger was in front to bury the rebound. Both Rieder and Leivo have points in 12 straight contests.
Kitchener jumped to a two goal lead near the midway mark of the period with a 4-on-4 goal scored by Matt Puempel. Justin Bailey carried the puck over the blueline and dropped a pass for the Ottawa Senators prospect, who beat Stolarz with a long shot blocker-side for his 24th of the season. The second assist was credited to Frank Corrado.
The Knights got on the board with less than four minutes remaining in the first. Max Domi carried the puck behind the Rangers net and slid a wraparound goal behind goaltender Joel Vienneau. His 30th of the season was assisted by team-scoring leader Seth Griffith and Tommy Hughes.
A late period power play marker pulled London even at 2-2. Josh Anderson jumped on a rebound in front of Vienneau, lifiting it over the netminder for his 19th of the year. Matt Rupert assisted on the goal, scored with 51 seconds to play.
Ben Thomson put the Rangers back in front with 8 seconds remaining before the intermission. The veteran power forward slipped a shot by the right skate of Stolarz, tying his career-best total with his 11th of the season. Kitchener native Derek Schoenmakers earned a helper on the goal.
The Knights out-shot the Rangers 15-12 in the first period.
Kitchener maintained its one goal advantage through the second period. Each team fired 13 shots on goal in a scoreless middle frame.
The Rangers extended their lead to 4-2 with 5:37 remaining, when Rieder potted his second of the game. Puempel collected a rebound in front of the London net and moved it quickly to Leivo. His pass found Rieder to the left of Stolarz and the Edmonton Oilers prospect fired it glove side to earn his 24th of the year.
With less than three minutes to play, the Knights cut their deficit to a single goal. Chris Tierney moved the puck from behind the net to defenceman Scott Harrington in the slot. He beat Vienneau with a quick shot blocker-side, his second goal of the season. Anderson collected his second point of the afternoon with an assist on the play.
The Rangers and Knights each fired 11 shots at the net in the third, with London finishing the game with a 39-36 overall advantage. Vienneau made 36 saves and improves to 8-1-0-2 since nbeing traded to Kitchener.
With the win, the Rangers improve to 32-15-1-6 and move into second place in the Midwest Division, one point ahead of the Owen Sound Attack.
