Oshawa Generals News Release
St. Catherines, Ontario - If the playoffs started today, the first round matchup for the Generals would be the Niagara Ice Dogs, a team that has eliminated the Generals the past two years. Both teams showed they had long memories as they engaged in a physical battle that had a playoff feel. It would however, be the Generals who would win the battle, skating away with the 4-2 victory. Tyler Biggs scored twice for the Generals, whose powerplay was at its best, converting on 3 of their 6 powerplay chances. Daniel Altshuller picked up his 28th win of the season while Scott Laughton improved his point streak to 5 games.
The Generals opened the scoring at 8:33 of the first period. Six seconds into a Generals 5-on-3 powerplay, Boone Jenner's rebound found its way to Tyler Biggs, who promptly stuffed it past Christopher Festarini to give the Generals the early lead. Neither team could add to the score in the period, as the Generals outshot Niagara 14-8.
Niagara grabbed the lead in the second on goals from Brendan Perlini and Ryan Strome. Perlini bounced his off Altshuller from a bad angle, while Strome beat the Oshawa netminder with a quick shot over his shoulder. The Generals responded quickly on the powerplay, as Scott Sabourin was able to sweep a rebound past Festarini for his 24th of the season.
Oshawa reclaimed the lead 1:07 into the third on their sixth powerplay of the game. Scott Laughton was able to find the loose puck out front, as he beat Festarini on yet another rebound opportunity. The Ice Dogs kept Altshuller on his toes, but the Oshawa netminder was up to the task and made several big saves to keep his team in the game. Tyler Biggs ensured the victory with 0:09 seconds left in the third as he held off the Niagara defender and slid the puck into the net giving the Generals the 4-2 victory.
The Generals outshot Niagara 37-27.
Scott Laughton picked up first star of the game with a goal and two assists.
The Generals return to the General Motors Centre on the 10th as they host the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds on "Pucks 4 Hearts" Night. The puck will be dropped by former General Brett MacLean at 6:05pm.
