Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
FRISCO - Thursday's series opener featured six home runs, but it was a force play at second base which produced the go-ahead run in Frisco's 6-5 victory over Corpus Christi at Dr Pepper Ballpark.
With the game level at 5 and one away in the eighth, the RoughRiders loaded the bases against Travis Ballew (3-4). Zach Cone smashed a 2-1 pitch up the middle. Jack Mayfield made a diving stop behind the bag and flipped to Jio Mier, who stepped on second and fired a whirling throw to first base. Cone beat the play by a step, allowing Trever Adams to score the decisive run.
Teoscar Hernandez's first-inning home run, his third blast in the last four games, put Corpus Christi (13-14, 61-36) in front 1-0. Preston Beck answered in the home half with a two-run shot off Adrian Houser.
The Hooks went ahead 3-2 in the fourth. Jack Mayfield worked a lead-off, four-pitch walk from Frank Lopez. Jon Kemmer launched the next offering onto the berm just to the left of the batter's eye in center. Kemmer, who has gone deep in back-to-back games, ranks 5th in the Texas League with 13 home runs.
Houser was victimized by three consecutive extra-base hits in the next half inning. Ryan Cordell and Cone bookended the barrage with long balls. Cone's two-run poke gave the Riders (17-9, 46-50) a 5-3 edge.
Juan Grullon relieved Lopez in the sixth and promptly walked A.J. Reed. Mayfield then belted an 0-2 pitch which struck the roof of the pavilion beyond the left-field fence, tying the game at 5.
Juan Minaya pitched in relief for the Hooks and retired seven of the eight men he faced, striking out five.
Jefri Hernandez allowed the first two to reach in the seventh but Corpus Christi failed to render the opportunity into a run.
Cody Ege (3-2) worked the eighth and Andrew Faulkner pitched a perfect ninth for his first save.
Joe Musgrove (2-0, 3.43) and Michael Feliz (3-2, 3.05) take the hill for the Hooks Friday night. Lefty Chad Bell (3-10, 4.92) gets the call for Frisco. First pitch 7:05.
