Frisco RoughRiders News Release
FRISCO, TEXAS (June 21, 2015) - The RoughRiders battled back from a two-run deficit in the eighth inning and bested the Midland RockHounds in 15 innings with a 5-4 victory on Father's Day at Dr Pepper Ballpark. With runners on first and second, Guilder Rodriguez laid a successful sacrifice and forced a throwing error from third basemen Ryon Healy, allowing Edwin Garcia to score the game winning run.
The Riders utilized four consecutive base hits to tie the game in the eighth. J.T. Wise knocked in Nick Williams with an RBI double and Drew Robinson tied the game with an infield single to score Nomar Mazara. The inning was cut short when Garcia lined into a tough-luck double play.
The Riders took an early 1-0 lead in the second when Garcia hit a two-out double to score Robinson. Midland answered in the third when Carson Blair hit his sixth home run to tie the game at one.
Frisco took the lead in the sixth inning as Nomar Mazara belted his eighth home run of the season into right-centerfield. Midland starter Jake Sanchez left the game after six innings, allowing two runs on four hits with four walks and four strikeouts in the no-decision.
Josh Whitaker pounded a three-run go-ahead home run in the seventh off Riders reliever Jesus Pirela to put Midland ahead, 4-2.
Defense and pitching was the tale of the extra innings. Midland's Andres Avilla pitched three scoreless innings. In the 11th, with Rodriguez representing the winning run at second base, Whitaker made a diving catch to rob Mendez of a walk-off hit.
Victor Payano (2-2) earned his second victory of the season with two scoreless frames.
Midland turned to infielder Wade Kirkland (0-1) to pitch the 15th inning. Garcia and Beck both singled before Rodriguez dropped a perfect bunt, forcing Healy to make an errant throw to plate the winning run.
The RoughRiders return to action on Monday night at Dr Pepper Ballpark. Texas Rangers LHP Martin Perez will make a rehab start for Frisco. He will oppose RockHounds starter RHP Jonathan Joseph in the 7:05 contest. For tickets to see the Riders in 2015, call 972-731-9200, e-mail Info@RidersBaseball.com or visit www.ridersbaseball.com.
