CORPUS CHRISTI - For most of the last century, music was an afterthought at the ballpark. The National Anthem and "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" were standards at professional games; other than that, it was pretty skinny.

When the Houston Astros introduced "Deep in the Heart of Texas" for the seventh-inning stretch at the Astrodome in 1965, fans loved it. The 1941 ditty is a catchy tune; patrons sang (and clapped) along, their sense of fun and, in most cases, state pride enabling even the most reluctant and/or rhythmically challenged to enjoy participating.

Today, teams have Ballpark Entertainment personnel who work to engage fans of all ages and enhance their experiences.

But not many have theme songs. Now the Corpus Christi Hooks do, thanks to Rich O'Toole. The native Houstonian and country music star was commissioned by team marketing director Andy Steavens in February.

"It was such an honor to write the theme song for the Hooks, I'm a giant fan and love the game of baseball," O'Toole said. "I was hooked before they ever asked."

"Rich is so very talented; his track record as a writer and performer speaks for itself," Steavens said. "He has such a great feel for Whataburger Field and Hooks Baseball, not to mention the relationship we're so blessed to have with our community. We are delighted with the way it came out."
