Frisco RoughRiders News Release
FRISCO, TEXAS (June 22, 2015) - Patrick Cantwell hit a go-ahead, two-run home run in the eighth inning to propel the Frisco RoughRiders to a 5-4 win over Midland on Mondaynight at Dr Pepper Ballpark. The blast was Cantwell's first of the year and it came with the Riders trailing by a run. The team closed out the first half of the season with back-to-back victories.
Texas Rangers pitcher Martin Perez made his second rehab start with Frisco on Monday. The left-hander allowed a solo homer to Colin Walsh on the first pitch of the game but settled in to toss three innings, allowing the lone run on two hits with four strikeouts. He threw 28 of his 39 pitches for strikes.
Frisco responded immediately in the bottom of the first. Midland starter Jonathan Joseph walked Jake Skole to start the frame and advanced on an Edwin Garcia single. Nick Williams followed with an RBI double off the left field wall to tie the game at 1-1. In the bottom of the third, the Riders loaded the bases and Drew Robinson worked a four-pitch walk to bring home another tally and make it 2-1 Frisco.
In a back-and-forth affair, Midland's bats woke up in the sixth inning. Josh Whitaker started off the frame with a double down the left field line off Andrew Faulkner, who entered the contest in the fifth. Three batters later, Matt Olson hit a single to right field to score Whitaker and tie the game at 2-2.
Frisco took the lead right back in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Garcia hit a groundball to Chad Pinder, but the shortstop bobbled the ball and threw it into Midland's dugout to advance Garcia to second. Williams followed with a single to right to score Garcia and break the tie, giving the Riders a 3-2 lead.
In the top of the eighth, the RockHounds pounced on a weary Faulkner. Midland loaded the bases and Matt Angle sent a flare single to left field to bring home Pinder and Ryon Healy, making it 4-3 'Hounds.
Ryan Doolittle (2-1) gave up a leadoff single in the bottom of the eighth and then Cantwell sent his first home run of the season over the left-centerfield wall to score two. David Martinez pitched a perfect ninth to seal the Riders' second straight win. Faulkner (6-3) was credited with the victory after allowing three runs in four innings.
The RoughRiders return to action on Tuesday night at Dr Pepper Ballpark to begin the second half of the season. RHP Jake Thompson (6-5) will be countered by the RockHounds' RHP Chris Jensen (5-5) in the 7:05 p.m. contest. It will be another Taco Tuesday, where tacos will be $2 all game long.
