Frisco RoughRiders News Release
AMARILLO, Texas - The Frisco RoughRiders tied their largest comeback win of the year on Sunday, erasing a six-run deficit to win 11-8 over the Amarillo Sod Poodles from HODGETOWN. Trailing 7-1 in the seventh, the Riders plated seven runs to take the lead.
Amarillo (28-28, 60-65) struck first in the first inning when Jorge Barrosa reached on an infield single before stealing second, third and home to make it 1-0. The Sod Poodles then put up five runs in the second to take a 6-0 lead.
In the top of the third the Riders (32-24, 68-57) countered with an RBI double from Justin Foscue, his ninth RBI of the series, to make it 6-1, but a Tim Tawa RBI groundout in the bottom of the inning for Amarillo increased their advantage to 7-1.
That score held until the top of the seventh when Jonathan Ornelas ripped an RBI single to center with the bases loaded, lowering the deficit to 7-2. After consecutive bases-loaded walks from Aaron Zavala and Foscue, Blaine Crim hammered a grand slam to give the Riders an 8-7 advantage.
The Crim home run was his sixth of the series and tied a franchise record as he has homered in five-straight ballgames, knotting him with Trey Hair, who accomplished the feat earlier this season in Amarillo.
Amarillo shortstop Jordan Lawlar then tied the game at 8-8 with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh, but Frisco countered back in the top of the eighth.
Zavala began this scoring in the eighth with a go-ahead RBI single into right-center field to make it 9-8 against Mack Lemieux (0-3). Foscue and Luisangel Acuna then followed with RBI singles of their own to inflate the lead to 11-8.
Grant Wolfram earned his first save on the season by recording the last six outs of the game for Frisco, allowing just one hit. Joe Corbett (3-1) took home the victory, allowing just one run in an inning of work.
Along with the RoughRiders win, a Midland win kept the Frisco lead at the top of the Texas League South Division in the second half at two games with 12 games remaining.
Frisco returns home to begin their final home stand of the regular season on Tuesday, September 6th with an 11:05 a.m. start on an Olsson Education Day at Riders Field.
