Riders Ride Out of Town with 5-2 Win

The Springfield Cardinals fell to 0-4 at home in 2007, losing the series finale to the Frisco RoughRiders on Tuesday afternoon. Frisco's 5-2 victory at Hammons Field gave the Riders a three-game sweep and marks the first winless home stand in Springfield's brief three-year history.

Back-to-back-to-back homers in the fifth inning against Cards' starter Chris Lambert gave Frisco the lead for good. That would be enough for RoughRiders' starter Eric Hurley who worked into the eighth inning, surrendering just one run on two hits.

Tyler Greene's second homer of the year was the only blemish on Hurley's resume on Tuesday, as his second homer of the year gave the Cards a 1-0 lead in the second inning.

That lead would hold until the fifth, when Lambert ran into problems with the deep ball. The Cards' right-hander, who hadn't allowed a home run in his first two starts, surrendered a home run to Steve Murphy to open the inning, tying the game at 1-1. Emerson Frostad and Kevin Richardson would also follow with home runs, giving the Riders the lead for good at 3-1. Frisco added another run in the sixth against Lambert, making it 4-1. Lambert (0-1) pitched five-plus innings, allowing four runs on six hits, with one strikeout and one walk.

Cards' reliever Matt Scherer was touched for his first run allowed this year, as Frisco went up 5-1 in the eighth.

Hurley (2-0) was pulled after striking out Bryan Anderson to open the eighth, going a total of seven and 1/3 innings. The Frisco right-hander struck out six and did not allow a walk, in earning his second win of the year.

Frisco reliever Jesse Ingram gave up a run in the ninth as Mike McCoy doubled to open the inning and then later scored on an RBI groundout by Juan Richardson, pulling the Cards to within three at 5-2. Ingram would settle down though, getting Joe Mather to fly to center field for the last out of the game.

Springfield (2-7) will enjoy a day off on Wednesday, before taking to the road for a short four-game trip to Tulsa. Eric Haberer (0-0) will make his first start of the year on Thursday night in the opening game of the Tulsa series. The Drillers will counter with right-hander Ryan Mattheus. Game time from Drillers Stadium on Thursday night is 7:05pm. The Cards return home next Monday night for an eight-game home stand. The World Series Trophy will be at Hammons Field on both Monday, April 23rd and Tuesday, April 24th. Fans can get their picture taken with the trophy that represents the St. Louis Cardinals' tenth World Series Championship.
