Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Top pitching prospects faced off at Whataburger Field Tuesday evening - Corpus Christi's Troy Patton and Franklin Morales of Tulsa.
Patton lasted three innings longer and was more effective, but Morales and the Drillers prevailed, 4-3, before 6,286.
The Drillers wasted little time in the first as their first four batters reached base. After consecutive bunt singles by Jonathan Herrera and Chris Frey, Matt Miller lined a two-run double to the gap in left-center.
Corpus Christi evened the score in the fourth. Hooks third baseman Neil Sellers led off with a solo home run to right-center and Todd Self scored from second base on a single down the right field line by Francisco Caraballo. It was Caraballo's second hit of the night after an 0-for-22 start.
The Hooks took a 3-2 lead in the next inning after chasing Morales, who left with the bases loaded and none out. Singles by Drew Sutton and Self sandwiched a walk by Sellers before Lou Santangelo scored Sutton on a ground out to second. Reliever Jarrett Grube (1-0) escaped further trouble by retiring Ray Sadler on a roller to second and Caraballo on a fly to center.
Two-out RBI singles by pinch-hitter Jordan Czarniecki and Herrera pushed Tulsa back in front, 4-3, during the seventh.
Herrera finished the night with four hits in as many at-bats.
Patton (1-1) allowed 10 hits and struck out four before leaving the game in favor of Ryan Thompson in the eighth.
Morales surrendered seven hits, walked four and struck out four. Tulsa's third pitcher, Juan Morillo, wowed the crowd in the seventh by touching 101 on the stadium radar gun.
Steven Register earned his fourth save in as many opportunities by working the ninth.
The Hooks (4-8) travel to Frisco for a four-game series Thursday through Sunday. Tulsa (6-6) returns home to play Springfield this weekend.
