Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Frisco rallied to score single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to defeat Corpus Christi, 4-3, in Texas League action Monday night before 6,948 at Whataburger Field.
Jim Fasano's two-out, eighth-inning double to left center scored Kevin Richardson and provided the RoughRiders with a 3-2 lead. Richardson reached on a two-out error by second baseman Jonny Ash.
Steven Murphy's RBI single pushed Frisco's fourth run across. Pinch-runner Osvaldo Fernando scored for Corpus Christi in the ninth on a ground out by Neil Sellers.
The starting pitchers, Armando Galarraga of Frisco and Corpus Christi's Josh Miller, matched zeros for four innings. Galarraga, who lasted 6 1/3 innings, permitted two earned runs, five hits, one walk and struck out six.
After holding Midland to two runs over seven innings last Wednesday, Miller turned in another fine performance, allowing an unearned run and four hits in six innings. He struck out four and walked one.
In the Frisco fifth, two singles and a throwing error by Hooks first baseman Neil Sellers on a fielder's choice loaded the bases with nobody out. Anthony Webster lifted a sacrifice fly to left, plating Travis Metcalf.
With the infield drawn in and runners at second and third, Miller induced a ground ball to shortstop Edwin Maysonet, who cut down German Duran trying to score. Maysonet prevented another run when he robbed Murphy of a single up the middle and threw him out at first.
Frisco posted its second run in the seventh off reliever Felipe Paulino. The highly-touted prospect, fresh from Houston's extended spring training, yielded a double by Webster that scored Casey Benjamin from first base. Paulino (0-1) exited the game in the eighth after allowing two runs, one earned, and three hits. He struck out four and did not walk a batter.
With one away in the seventh, Noochie Varner walked and moved to third on Lou Santangelo's double to right field. Sellers' roll out to first scored Varner and Santangelo raced home when the right side of Frisco's infield was unable to field a high fly off the bat of Francisco Caraballo into 40-mile per hour winds.
The Hooks begin a four-game road trip Tuesday against Midland at 6:30. Corpus Christi's Ronnie Martinez (1-1) will face Ben Fritz (1-1).
