Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Tulsa Drillers grabbed a win over the Springfield Cardinals in the final game of the home stand, winning 8-2 on Monday afternoon at Hammons Field.
Tulsa's Tino Sanchez broke open a 2-1 game with a three-run homer to left, as part of a five-run inning, as the Drillers salvaged a split of the four-game series. Jeff Dragicevich also homered and had three hits, as Tulsa reclaimed sole possession of first place in the North Division, now one game ahead of Springfield.
Drillers' starter Ching-Lung Lo (2-2) scattered six Springfield hits over six innings in earning the win. He surrendered a first-inning sac fly to Joe Mather and then a home run to Mather in the sixth. Mather's homer is his league-leading tenth of the year, while today's two RBIs give him 16, tying him for the league-lead in that department.
Cards' starter Eric Haberer (1-1) held Springfield's 1-0 advantage until the third, when Tulsa got an RBI groundout from Matt Miller to tie the game at 1-1.
In the fifth, Tulsa took the lead for good with five unearned runs against Haberer. After an infield single from Jonathan Herrera, Chris Frey tried to sacrifice him to second base. Frey's bunt was fielded by Haberer, but the throw to first sailed into right field, opening the door for a big inning. After an RBI groundout from Jordan Czarniecki gave Tulsa a 2-1 lead, Sanchez followed three batters later with his first homer of the year, making it 5-1. Tulsa got one more in the inning to go up 6-1, as Duke Sardinha doubled home a run.
Tulsa capped the scoring with a home run from Dragicevich, his third homer in as many days, giving Tulsa an 8-2 advantage in the ninth.
The Cards couldn't do much against the Tulsa bullpen, producing only a pair of hits in the ninth against Matt Daily, who got the final three outs.
Springfield (9-11) heads for Wichita on Tuesday, opening a brief four-game road trip against the Wranglers. The Cards will send Mitchell Boggs (1-2) to the mound in the series opener, while Wichita will go with left-hander Danny Christensen (0-0). Game time from Wichita on Tuesday night is 7:00pm. The Cards will return to Hammons Field on Saturday night, opening an eight-day home stand. Saturday night is Cinco de Mayo with a huge celebration planned at the ballpark.
