Riders add three Canadians to roster
May 24, 2007 - Canadian Football League (CFL)
Saskatchewan Roughriders News Release
Saskatchewan Roughrider General Manager/VP of Football Operations Eric Tillman announced today they have signed non-import linebacker Joe Barners, non-import defensive lineman Glen Larocque and non-import running back Josh Martyr to multi-year contracts. Financial terms of the signings were not disclosed.
Barnes (6'0 - 215 lbs.) has spent the past four seasons at the University of Ottawa. The 26-year old linebacker finished his senior season with 64.5 total tackles, four quarterback sacks, two forced fumbles and two interceptions.
"Joe has been the 'quarterback' of Ottawa's defense," stated Tillman. "He is a cerebral guy who understands the game and has good football instincts."
Larocque (6'6 - 260 lbs.) is a graduate from Western Ontario. The 22-year old moved from tight end to defensive line during the 2006 training camp at Western. He had two catches for 17 yards in 2005 as a tight end.
"Glen is a big man who runs well, as evidenced by his background at tight end. We very much wanted to inject some youth into the defensive line competition and Glen is a good athlete who gives us that."
Martyr (6'0 - 210 lbs.) spent five seasons at York University. Last year the 26-year old had 21 carries for 97 yards and a touchdown. He led York in rushing in 2002 with 440 yards.
"Josh is a young man who went to teacher's college and, as a result of interrupting his playing career, sort of fell through the cracks. Alex Smith and Mike Gibson saw Josh at the Laval evaluation camp and really liked his overall athleticism. He's also a real character guy, which we place a premium on."
