Edmonton Elks News Release
Edmonton, AB - The defending CFL West Division champion Edmonton Eskimos today announced the signing of one of the league's top Canadian players, slotback Rick Walters.
A veteran of nine CFL seasons, Rick has spent the last four years in Edmonton where he has established himself as a versatile and reliable part of the Esks offence. Last season, Rick caught 26 passes for 389 yards (Avg:15.0, Lg:37) and 2 TDs in 18 regular season games. He also chipped in with 4 tackles and 5 special teams tackles. In the CFL West Final (vs. Winnipeg), Rick had 2 catches for 18 yards. Grey Cup vs. Montreal, Rick scored Edmonton's first points of the game with a 17 yard TD catch from Ricky Ray early in the third quarter. He finished the game with 2 receptions for 29 yards.
"Rick has made significant contributions to the Eskimos both on and off the field," said Eskimo Head Coach Tom Higgins. "His signing means we are a step closer to having all of our free agents re-signed."
A product of Edmonton's Archbishop O'Leary High School, Rick attended Simon Fraser University and led the Clansmen in each of his four seasons. Signed as a free agent with Saskatchewan in 1994, Rick spent five seasons with the 'Riders. He returned home in 1999 when he signed with the Eskimos. Off the field, Rick takes an active role in the community, and in 2001 received the CFL's prestigious Tom Pate Memorial Award for his charitable efforts. Rick and wife Jana reside in Edmonton and he currently attends the University of Alberta.
