OTTAWA (March 21, 2003) -- Import tailback Nathan Norman has signed a contract with the Ottawa Renegades. The deal is for one year with a club option for a second season.
Norman (6-0, 205, St. Ambrose) joins the Renegades after a three-year collegiate career with the St. Ambrose University Fighting Bees (Davenport, Iowa) of the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics).
The 23-year-old native of Princeton, Illinois spent three seasons at St. Ambrose where he rushed for 4,952 yards on 762 carries, an average of 6.5 yards each carry. He scored 38 touchdowns in 33 career games.
In his final season with the Fighting Bees in 2001, Norman scored 13 touchdowns and gained 2,069 yards on 291 carries in 11 games, an average of 188 yards each game.
His football coach at St. Ambrose, Todd Sturdy, described Norman as "a total back."
"You don't see the combination that Nate possesses very often," said Sturdy in October of 2001 after Norman received the NAIA Football Offensive Player of the Week honour. "He is fast, strong, agile. You name it, Nate is just that."
Norman won the award after rushing for 228 yards and two touchdowns during a victory over Iowa Wesleyan College.
