Portland Pirates News Release

PORTLAND, ME- The Portland Pirates announced today that Rick Burrill has been named the Pirates Athletic Trainer. Burrill comes to Portland from his position as an Athletic Trainer with the Los Angles Kings, where he served the past six seasons assisting the club with orthopedic assessment, traumatic injury treatment procedures and rehabilitation. Burrill has 14 years of experience as an Athletic Trainer and has compiled over 1,000 games in professional hockey.

"I am very happy to be coming home. My father was a season ticket holder for the Maine Mariners and I grew up watching hockey in the Cumberland County Civic Center, so to come back to that very same building and be part of the Pirates franchise again is a big thrill. I am also excited to be coming back to Maine in front of family and friends, it's going to be terrific," said Pirates Athletic Trainer Rick Burrill.

Burrill, 46, started his career as an Assistant Certified Athletic Trainer with the Portland Pirates and Washington Capitals during the 1993-94 season before he became the Head Certified Athletic Trainer & Equipment Manager for the Hampton Roads Admirals (ECHL) from 1993-1996. Following his time with the Admirals, he spent the next three seasons as the Head Certified Athletic Trainer for the Long Beach Ice Dogs (IHL) before joining the Los Angles Kings as a Certified Athletic Trainer in 1999.

During his career, Burrill also worked in the UHL during the NHL lockout in 2005 as the Head Certified Athletic Trainer for the Muskegon Fury Colonial Cup Championship team. His accolades also include, serving as an Athletic Trainer for the ECHL All-Star Game (1994) the IHL All-Star Game (1999) and the NHL All-Star Game (2002).

A native of Freeport, Maine, Burrill earned his Bachelor of Science degree at Northeastern University and is a member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association and the Professional Hockey Trainers Society.

Burrill will replace Angel Soutuyo who served as the Pirates Athletic Trainer for the past eight seasons. Soutuyo is now employed as an Athletic Trainer at Orthopedic Associates in Portland.
