Gateway Grizzlies News Release
SAUGET, Ill. -- Trevor Richards allowed no earned runs in 7.1 innings of work Wednesday night to lead the Gateway Grizzlies to a 5-2 victory over the Frontier Greys at GCS Ballpark.
The win gave the Grizzlies (31-48) back-to-back wins for the ninth time this season. The Greys (38-42) have now lost three straight.
Richards (5-5) and Greys RHP Max Duval (1-2) were in a pitchers' duel early on. The two hurlers traded scoreless frames until Blake Brown started the scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning. Brown launched a home run to left field to begin the fifth to put Gateway on top 1-0.
That was just the start of Duval's troubles in the inning. He then walked Richard Seigel and hit Grant Buckner with a pitch to put two runners on for Tyler Tewell. Tewell delivered with a single to score Seigel and put the Grizzlies ahead 2-0.
Richards continued to keep the Greys off the scoreboard and the Grizzlies backed him up with another run in the sixth. After Craig Massoni walked, Ben Waldrip doubled to put runners on second and third with nobody out. Duval then walked Brown to load the bases and the next batter Seigel delivered a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Greys finally got to Richards in the eighth inning when Julio Rodriguez doubled and later scored after Waldrip committed an error at first base. That knocked Richards out of the game and JaVaun West kept the damage at just one run after coming on to pitch in relief.
Gateway got the run back in the bottom half on an RBI single by Grant Buckner and tacked on another when Antonio Sandifer walked with the bases loaded.
The Grizzlies led 5-1 entering the ninth inning and eventually came away with the victory. The Greys touched up Pete Perez for one run on two hits and brought the tying run to the plate with two outs. RHP Ross Spurgeon then ended the game by retiring Rodriguez to give the Grizzlies the victory.
Ben Waldrip led the way offensively for Gateway with two hits.
The Grizzlies and Greys will finish their series Thursday night at GCS Ballpark. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. LHP Jordan Spencer (1-1, 4.03) will pitch for Gateway and RHP Colin Feldtman (4-1, 2.85) will take the mound for the Greys. Sam Levitt and Kevin Schaefer will call the action on the Grizzlies Radio Network, which airs on 101 ESPN's digital platforms and 1400 AM KJFF.
