Louisville Bats News Release
Norfolk, VA - Greg Reynolds (W, 8-0) pitched six innings of one run baseball; Logan Ondrusek and Jose Diaz (S, 2) combined for three perfect innings of relief to secure the 2-1 victory. The Bats' fourth straight win improves their record to 34-35, while the Tides fall to 38-31.
Greg Reynolds took the mound for the Bats on Saturday with the second best ERA in the International League at 2.51, and an IL-leading 92 innings pitched. His six inning, one run outing improved his ERA to 2.45. Ondrusek made his second appearance since joining the Bats and pitched two innings of perfect relief. Diaz entered in the ninth and made quick work of the Tides to earn the save.
The Bats got the scoring started in the second inning, with the help of some shoddy Norfolk defense. A base hit followed by back-to-back errors loaded the bases. Jason Donald hit a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead. The Tides defense would save a run in the inning, however, when third baseman Zelous Wheeler was able to cut down Denis Phipps at the plate. Tides' starter Daniel McCutchen (L, 0-1) worked out of the inning giving up just the one run.
Billy Hamilton doubled with one out in the fifth, and then stole third. The stolen base was his league-leading 42nd of the season, 16 more than second place. Josh Fellhauer, who went 3-for-4 on the night, drove in Hamilton to push the Bats' lead to 2-0.
Reynolds got into trouble in the 6th inning, loading the bases with just one out. Outfielder L.J. Hoes drove in the Tides' first run of the game to make the score 2-1. With the bases still loaded, Reynolds induced a double play to get out of the inning with no further damage.
The six innings were not as clean as most of Reynolds' starts this season, as he gave up eight hits and three walks, striking out just one. He was effective nonetheless, earning his tenth quality start and eighth win of the season. Ten of Reynolds' thirteen starts this season have been quality starts.
Reliever Logan Ondrusek entered in the seventh, and pitched two perfect frames. Diaz pitched a perfect ninth to earn the save and give the Bats their fourth straight victory.
Felix Perez went 2-for-4 as the DH tonight, and is 18-for-46 (.391) in that role this year. All other designed hitters are just 22-for-125 (.176).
With his 3-for-4 game, Fellhauer has improved his average from .217 to .287 in just 18 games, going 23-for-57 (.404) in that span.
In their series finale in Norfolk on Sunday at 1:05pm, the Bats look to extend their season high winning streak to five games, and earn their first series sweep of the year. Taking the mound for the Bats will be RHP Chad Reineke (5-3, 3.76). He will face LHP Zach Britton (3-2, 3.28).
